SMUGGLING.
General Regulations.
The Mates and Engineers must report to the Captain if they become aware of any smuggling being carried on by the Crew or Native Passengers, and they must render all assistance to Customs' Officers who may be ordered to search the Steamr.
See General Regulation No. 18. Captains must take all means in their power to prevent smuggling by the crew, and the whole of the ship's executive staff must co-operate to prevent it. Neglect of due precautions may lead to

The
very serious difficulties with the Customs Authorities. The Engineers will be held responsible for the proper search of all parts conected with their departments. Mates are responsible for the rest of the ship. Compradore will be held responsible for the actions of all tho se employed by him. An entry should be made in the Log Book when the ship is searched by the Mates and Engineers, or when any other means have been taken to discover contra- band goods.
Notices re prevention of smuggling to be kept posted in the Mess Room, Wheelhouse and Compradore's room.
SMUGGLING SALT. Captains and Officers are requested to note that whenever smuggled salt is seized, a report containing full particulars as to position, etc., of the salt when found, is to be obtained from the Customs Officer
A copy of this report is to be sent to the Manager's Office with a letter giving steps taken to punish the persons im- plicated, so as to prevent a recurrence.
